Scientists use a specialized way of talking about the world. This mode of discourse is evident in the ways that scientists debate and discuss scientific concepts and in the ways they conduct and communicate about scientific inquiry.

In the course of Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading™ units, students are asked to use scientific language and science talk as they pose questions, hypothesize, record their observations, construct explanations, share their understandings, and debate scientific issues. The recognition that particular ways of talking are valued within particular communities and increased facility with the important discourse of science will serve students throughout their academic lives.

The discourse of science is one of the many academic discourses that students are expected to understand and use when encountering texts and tests in school.
