Inquiry and comprehension are powerful problem-solving and meaning-making methods in both science and reading. In the quest for understanding, good readers and good scientists use many of the same strategies. They ask questions and seek answers to those questions. They make and test predictions in order to construct understanding. They make observations and comparisons. They draw inferences and conclusions. They gather information to answer questions and solve problems. In Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading units, students are given opportunities to develop comprehension and inquiry abilities as they investigate questions in both first- and second-hand situations, that is, in situations where they conduct investigations, and in situations where they read about research by others. |
