In order to engage in scientific discourse, students must begin to transition from using their everyday language to using more precise scientific language as they discuss and write about science.

Learning the language of science through the Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading program involves gaining active control over (being able to read, write, and use orally) a core set of science words. It is a goal in each Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading unit that students will learn to read, write, and use orally a set of concept words specific to the domain of that unit. It is also a goal that students will learn and use a set of ubiquitous process-related science inquiry words that they will encounter inside and outside school. Students are exposed to these core words orally and in text throughout each unit. They are encouraged to use these words—in place of the everyday counterparts—in their talk and writing.

These words, which students are unlikely to acquire in their everyday lives, are a powerful resource, a resource that can provide students access to the challenging academic texts they will encounter as they move through school.
