Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading™
Graduate School of Education and Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS)

  • Literacy Post-doctoral Scholar Position
  • Science Post-doctoral Scholar Position

Program Description

Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading is an NSF-funded curriculum development and research project housed at the University of California, Berkeley, and led by P. David Pearson and Jacqueline Barber. Faculty and staff from the Lawrence Hall of Science and Graduate School of Education are working to develop and test new models of science and literacy integration and to use these models to develop twelve science/literacy units across grades 1-5. The units offer a combined focus on inquiry-based science learning and content-rich literacy learning.

Following a national field trial of our first three units for second-third grades, we are currently launching new units for grades 3-5. In addition, we have an ongoing research agenda designed to support our development work and make meaningful contributions to the literature on science and literacy education. Issues under study include: the influence of genre on students' ability to read and learn from text; the role of literacy in learning in inquiry-based science; the development of academic language, particularly among English learners, in the context of inquiry-based science instruction; what the "active" ingredients of the treatment are; role and development of scientific argumentation; and developmental learning progressions.

Duties

We are looking for postdoctoral scholars in the areas of both science and literacy to support our curriculum planning and development work and to participate as a member of our research team.

Activities include:

  • Helping to coordinate project activities, including curriculum development, assessment development, research, and evaluation.
  • Authoring a variety of curriculum materials, including teacher's guides, science books for students, and assessments.
  • Participating in curriculum planning, helping to develop literacy and science learning objectives for students and related pedagogical approaches for teachers.
  • Participating in the design and coordination of evaluation research (including research design, instrument development, data collection, data analysis, and reporting).
  • Supporting ongoing research and initiating new research studies to support our curriculum work and the development of scholarly models of science-literacy integration.
  • Authoring scholarly and practitioner-focused publications.
  • Leading the writing of grant proposals.

Duration of Appointment: Two years, beginning ASAP

Eligibility: Applicants must have an earned doctoral degree in education before the commencement of work. A focus on literacy or science education, and/or literacy or science assessment is required. Candidates must demonstrate excellent writing and research skills.
